NINA DANCES THROUGH LIFE’S PUDDLES

Why do I love Bermuda?

Among many reasons, there is a vibrant, colourful one.
It brings a smile to my face and wonder to my heart every time it appears.

It makes everyone happy and brightens every day. It appears and vanishes as if by magic in a fairytale.
It is a rainbow!

I live on the South Shore, perched on a cliff overlooking the foaming reefs and the graceful swells from the distant sapphire sea. In the calm of summer evenings, I watch impossibly tall and stately clouds on their quiet journeys, some dusting the ocean with gentle, shimmering sheets of rain, and I know, if I am patient, a miracle of color will appear.

I sometimes think of the power that creates this sublime beauty, and when I see a rainbow, I welcome it into my heart. I stretch my arms wide and gather those fleeting bands of color to me, and I feel refreshed, invigorated and happy.

Sometimes, I dream I could swim right under one of those majestic arcs and ascend up into the very soul of beauty.

A colorful bridge among the sky seems fantastic and unreal.

This bridge brings me back to my childhood when I still believed in magic. I remember sitting at the terrace in our summer house in Siberia, on the Angara River with my grandmother, Zoya. We were looking at the grey wall of rain in silence and listening to its tap dance on the wooden roof. The summer rain was heavy but brief.

The rain stopped, the sun came out and a shimmering rainbow appeared above the slow-moving river. I put on my rain boots, ran into the yard and began to dance, splashing through the puddles.

My grandmother walked over. She looked at me and then up at the rainbow. “Everyone can paint their own rainbow,” she said to me. I nodded, still splashing, and answered “Yes, of course … if I have coloured pencils or paints.” She smiled and said, “Not like that. You will grow up someday and understand.”

Last month, Bill and I were walking along Elbow Beach. Out on the ocean we saw a rainbow pouring out from a white puffy cloud. When a second rainbow came out beneath it, I remembered my childhood dance and began performing the Chinese Chi Gong Rainbow Dance I learnt in Asia.

Moving gracefully, I gazed at the rainbows and thought how I love painting my life with bright colours and sharing that vision with others. We all have colours in our hearts and souls, we just need to use them.

Red, I use to ignite a radiant loving energy.
Orange to bring optimism.
Yellow to keep my soul young.
Green to be always grateful.
Blue to help others blossom.
Indigo to inspire and be inspired.
Violet to celebrate victory.
